Sandy was chosen as the winner because of her commitment to changing the appeal of her pub from a Hogshead, serving groups of young male drinkers, with the inevitable issues inside and out, to a friendly, community house. Sandy has been instrumental in getting a Pub Watch group in operation in Brentwood, and she has developed a fantastic two-way relationship with other publicans in the area as well as with the local Licensing Officer.
The Swan is an outstanding example of responsible retailing in practice. There is no discounting of, or offers made on, any alcoholic product on the site. The main promotional activities take place around the food offer, tea, coffee and soft drinks. The live music is mainstream in style, with a piano player on Sundays and tribute bands forming the main entertainment. This encourages customers who tend to be older and more responsible in their behaviour. This change in customer focus has taken place gradually and with an increase in trade, a result she is deservedly proud of.
